A single fatal accident has been confirmed by Ivanhoe Mines’ Kamoa-Kakula mining complex in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The company said 9 September that the incident occurred at the underground Kansoko Mine in a development area when a fall of ground struck a Kamoa Copper employee.
A comprehensive internal investigation has commenced, and the miner said it is working with DRC authorities to facilitate their probe as well.
“Once the investigations are complete, management will review and implement any additional safety measures recommended to prevent such an accident from recurring,” it said.
“On behalf of the Kamoa Copper Joint Venture, Ivanhoe Mines extends its deepest condolences to the grieving family and friends of the deceased.”
Operations at the Kakula Mine and processing facility were not affected by the accident.
The Kamoa-Kakula Mining Complex is operated by Kamoa Copper, a joint venture between Ivanhoe Mines (39.6%), Zijin Mining Group (39.6%), Crystal River Global Limited (0.8%) and the DRC government (20%).
